Adelbert Nicholas Bourque

Age 98, of Yarmouth, passed away on June 8th, 2016, in Veteran’s Place, Yarmouth. Our family is saddened by the passing of our dear father. In the last couple of years, he has suffered and recovered from several challenging health problems. Born on December 6th, 1917, (the day of the Halifax Explosion) son of Jeremie and Sarafie Bourque. Dad has enjoyed a long and productive life. He courted many a gal and married the best one - our mom. Together, they built a warm and caring home for their family. When we were young students at school, dad would take great pleasure in stretching our math abilities through his long math sums that we would calculate at the kitchen table. Dad had a great passion for music - he could play the mouth organ before he went to school. He also loved his fiddle and his mandolin. One could truly say: he whistled while he worked. Dad proudly served in the Navy as a Petty Officer. After the war, he continued his trade of carpentry, building quite a few houses that are visible in the local villages from Tusket to Surette's Island. Many times, his work took him to Northern Nfld, and Labrador where he would work for months and return to us for Christmas. While it could be said that our Dad was a man of few words, his praise and mentorship were valued by many. He is survived by his children; Jerry (Julia), Suzanne Pelham (Chris), David (Bernadette), Eric and Renee; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by Joanne and Bill Bourque who cared for him with love and compassion for 14 years. During the last three years of his life, Dad was a resident at the Veterans Place in Yarmouth, where he enjoyed the friendship of vets and nursing staff alike. He also enjoyed the musical performances and would often sing along. Dad was pre-deceased by his parents, his wife, Jacqueline Burke; siblings, Leonard, Lillian, Jean-Baptiste, Geraldine, Celeste, and Victor. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
