DAVIS, Edward McKeown 'Ted' - Ted died peacefully on Monday, November 27, 2017 at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, in his 96th year.
He was married to the late Yahne Featherstonhaugh of Ottawa and leaves his son Tony (Elana) of Toronto, daughter Lynne (Jim Crouch) of Fenelon Falls and grandchildren Ryan (Paulina Garcia del Moral) and Janine, Tim and Peter (Elizabeth Dutton).
Ted was educated at Appleby College and the University of Toronto prior to enlisting in the Royal Navy in 1942. As a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm during service in the Far East Fleet, he took part in bombing attacks on enemy installations in Sumatra and on the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal.
At the end of 1944 his squadron returned to the UK and he came back to Canada on leave. Returning to England in March 1945, the ship in which he took passage was torpedoed and sunk. He was hospitalized due to injuries, and hostilities had ceased by the time he was released for further duty. Appointed to HMCS Warrior, Canada's first aircraft carrier, he served in naval aviation until the end of 1960 before retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Canadian Navy.
Ted became a volunteer with the Red Cross in Oakville, retiring after thirty years as a driver for the frail, elderly and disabled. During this time he was awarded the Order of the Red Cross for his services to the community.
