Delbert Peters

Delbert passed away on December 30, 2015 in Brookfield, Nova Scotia at the age of 88. He was born in Vina Alberta to his parents Ross and Adone Ruby (nee Oakes) Peters. Growing up in the small town of Cadomin Alberta, Delbert joined hte Royal Canadian Navy in 1946. Trained as an AT he sailed on the HMCS Magificent and Bonaventure. During his first training stint in Nuneaton, England Delbert met his wife Iris (nee Fokes). Married in Rugby, England in 1950 the couple returned to Canada and made Shearwater their home, where his three children, Shellie, Shane and Scott would be born.

Serving on the Bonaventure Del sailed the North Atlantic with missions to England, Malta, the Caribbean and crossing the equator to South America. After the 'Bonnie' Del was transferred to CFB Patrice Bay on Vancouver Island in 1967 but returned to Shearwater in 1970 until retiring from the armed forces in 1976.

Delbert's 2nd career was with EPSB in Edmonton, Alberta. Here although no longer in the Navy he became an important part of the formation of the Canadian Naval Air Group and subsequent reunions out west.

Retiring again in 1996, Delbert and Iris continued to travel to visit family, friends and naval comrades around the world until Iris's health presented Del with the challenge of caring for her until she passed away in 2012.

In 2014 Del moved back to Nova Scotia to live with his son Shane, spending time with his oldest navy buddy Frank Reesor, and again participating in CNAG functions at Shearwater NS.

A thoughtful, kind and gentle spirit he will be missed by everyone who knew him.
