Margaret Hetherington Bartlett

Passed away peacefully in Victoria, BC on May 7, 2017. Margaret, affectionately known as “Margie” to her friends, was born in Saskatoon, SK on May 24, 1916. Pre-deceased by her husband of 63 years, Richard, in 2010 she is survived by her son, Jim, in Kamloops, BC and her daughter Anne Dumonceaux (Marc) in Sidney, BC. Margie also leaves her brother Robert Falconer (Donalda) in Vancouver, BC. She leaves four grandsons, Nick and Chris Dumonceaux and Andrew and David Bartlett as well as five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

Margie was raised in Vancouver, BC. After high school graduation, she worked at a number of jobs in the city until the beginning of World War II when she joined the wartime services of the YMCA. She was posted to the then very active air base in Tofino, BC where she coordinated social activities for the largely American Air Force personnel posted there. A few years thereafter, she was recruited as a ground agent for Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) and worked at a number of airports in Atlantic Canada including Halifax, Moncton and Gander. Not long after the war, she met the man who was to become her husband, a Canadian who had returned home and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy after wartime service as a pilot in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. She and Richard “Dick” married in 1947 and lived in various locations across Canada until they settled in Victoria just prior Dick’s retirement in 1964. At this point, with her two children well settled into school, Margie decided slowly re-enter the work force. It was during this time that she discovered a perfect fit for her interests - the travel business. Margie became a travel agent and worked for many years in the field. She was even organizing group tours and cruises for friends and their associated organizations when she was into her late 80’s. Margie loved to travel, and just as much, to regale her friends and family with stories of her adventures from all over the world.

Margie always maintained an interest in the lives of those close to her, sharing their joys and accomplishments as well as providing concerned support during their times of difficulties. She was a most hospitable person who truly enjoyed spending time with others and had an enviable ability to develop and maintain enduring friendships. Her memory will endure in the hearts of those who have known and loved her through her magnificent century of life.
